Education as a catalyst for change: 20 years of transformation
In a world where poverty and inequality persist, education emerges as a powerful tool for social transformation. A passionate advocate for educational reform shares their journey and insights on how education can break the cycle of disadvantage, particularly in marginalised communities.Indiatoday.in spoke to Jaikrishan Jajoo regarding education as means of social reform.
The journey began during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake relief efforts, where the stark realities of ignorance and lack of awareness amongst marginalised communities became evident.
Witnessing firsthand how these factors exacerbated suffering inspired a commitment to education as a means of creating lasting change. "Education is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality," Jajoo explains. This realisation fuelled a desire to empower children with knowledge and skills, aiming not just to transform individuals but entire communities.
KEY CHALLENGES IN THE FIELD
Over two decades of working with disadvantaged communities has not been without challenges. One significant hurdle has been overcoming traditional beliefs that keep children, especially girls, out of school.
Many parents view education as unnecessary, opting instead for their children to contribute to household chores or work. The advocate recounts emotionally charged experiences of going door-to-door to sensitise families about the value of education.
Another pivotal moment was the effort to rebuild government schools that were in disrepair. "Seeing children walk into transformed schools with smiles and confidence has been a highlight of this journey," they reflect.
