India's first National Law University ventures into liberal arts with BA (hons)
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, India's first National Law University established in 1986, is all set to launch a three-year BA (Hons) programme in 2025, marking its expansion into liberal arts.
Known for revolutionising legal education with its integrated five-year BA LLB (Hons) course in 1987, the institution is now taking a bold step towards becoming a multidisciplinary university.
The new BA (Hons) programme builds on NLSIU’s 35 years of expertise in the social sciences and humanities.
Vice Chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy explained the vision, saying, “We are very clear in our minds as we start that the BA degree is the only degree that a student will need. It's a terminal degree.”
Designed with a professional orientation, the course will cover a wide range of emerging fields, including artificial intelligence, business consulting, digital journalism, creative writing, and policy advocacy. Students will also have the chance to learn Indian languages and participate in internships every year.
