Meet Shruti Tandon from IIT Madras: Wins prestigious Amelia Earhart Fellowship
Meet Shruti Tandon, A research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Shruti Tandon, has been honored with the prestigious Amelia Earhart Fellowship 2024 by Zonta International. Her research focuses on combustion instability in rocket and gas turbine engines, a study supported by the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) from the Government of India.
Combustion in these engines occurs under turbulent flow conditions, interacting with sound waves within the duct. This interaction can lead to high amplitude acoustic oscillations, potentially damaging the combustor and engine components. Tandon's work reveals that such oscillations arise from localised interactions within the combustor, which can be mitigated to prevent significant losses in the aviation and space sectors.
Expressing gratitude on her success, the research scholar Tandon credited her achievement to the support from her advisor, Professor RI Sujith, and her family.
The Amelia Earhart Fellowship, established in 1938 by Zonta International, aims to support women in aerospace engineering and space sciences. The $10,000 award is granted annually to up to 30 women pursuing PhD degrees in these fields, empowering them to excel and hold decision-making positions in the aerospace industry.
