12 fake universities closed in 10 years: Government releases records
The government has taken strong action against fraudulent institutions, shutting down 12 fake universities between 2014 and 2024.
In a recent statement, Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, urged state and Union Territory administrations to intensify efforts to close such deceitful establishments.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Majumdar highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the presence of 21 fake universities still operating across various states.
He called upon Members of Parliament (MPs), who often engage with large student followings on social media, to help publicise the list of these fraudulent institutions.
The Minister cautioned that while direct federal intervention might raise concerns over state autonomy, cooperation with the central government remains crucial in the fight against educational fraud.
In response to the growing issue, the Ministry has asked states and Union Territories to report any unlisted fake universities that may be operating within their jurisdictions, helping to ensure a comprehensive list is maintained by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
