More than 400 schools with no students shut in Himachal; 750 merged over 2 years
The minister clarified that school reorganisation is part of a broader plan to improve the state’s education system. The government has set a benchmark -- if student strength from Classes 6 to 12 is below 25, the school may be merged. Around 100 more schools with zero enrolment are also expected to be denotified.
Thakur added that 778 part-time water carriers who had served for at least 11 years -- combining daily wage and part-time roles -- have been regularised into Class IV positions. He described it as a move that fulfils long-pending demands of education staff.
To address teacher shortages, the government has cleared the way for 15,000 new teacher appointments.
This includes 3,900 posts in primary education and 3,100 posts soon to be filled via the Himachal Pradesh Rajya Chayan Aayog.
Thakur said the recruitment of teachers had slowed under the previous BJP-led government, but steps are now being taken to fill the gap.
The current government has appointed 700 school lecturers so far, in contrast to 511 during the BJP’s full five-year term. Additionally, 483 assistant professors have been hired in higher education and more than 200 acting principals have been confirmed in their roles.
