Breakthrough Skincare Innovation from USTM: Patent Published for Black Turmeric-Based Cream
In a significant stride for herbal healthcare and scientific innovation in Northeast India, researchers from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) have published a patent for a novel natural antimicrobial cream derived from black turmeric (Curcuma caesia Roxb.)- a medicinal plant long revered in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine.
Published in the Indian Patent Journal on July 25, 2025, this innovative cream combines the healing power of black turmeric, aloe vera, coconut oil, and sandalwood oil to deliver soothing, hydrating, and antimicrobial benefits. Designed to suit a wide range of skin types, the formulation targets acne, eczema, bacterial and fungal infections, while also providing long-term hydration and protection.
“Our goal was to create a safe, effective, and affordable skincare solution that integrates traditional plant-based wisdom with modern dermatological research,” said Dr. Deboja Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Biology, USTM.
The patent was filed by Rana Mukherjee, a PhD scholar from the Department of Applied Biology under the guidance of Dr. Sharma, with Moumita Sarkar of Nagaon serving as a co-inventor.
Why Black Turmeric?
Curcuma caesia, part of the Curcuma genus, has been used for centuries in both nutritional and therapeutic contexts. Known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and adaptogenic qualities, it has recently gained global interest for its potential in natural skincare.
The plant’s rhizomes are particularly valued in Ayurveda, used for boosting immunity, reducing inflammation, and treating various skin ailments. Rich in essential minerals such as Iron, Calcium, and Magnesium, along with proteins, fibres, and natural oils, the extract is a powerhouse of nutrients beneficial for skin health.
Impact and Future Potential
This patented innovation not only showcases USTM’s commitment to cutting-edge, socially relevant research but also positions Assam and the Northeast as key contributors to India’s herbal skincare and wellness industry. With rising global demand for chemical-free, sustainable skincare products, this breakthrough underscores the region's potential as a hub for natural dermatological solutions.
