- The global appeal of K-dramas, K-pop, and Japanese anime is driving interest in Korean and Japanese languages.The increasing presence of multinational companies in India is creating demand for language experts in languages like Spanish, German, French, Chinese, and Japanese.

With Spanish still remaining a popular choice, with over 5,000 to 6,000 students enrolling in Spanish language courses at IGNOU each semester, Japanese and Korean are growing demand due to job opportunities in companies like Samsung, Toyota, and Sony. While Mandarin Chinese fluctuates based on India-China relations, but Taiwan is promoting Mandarin language and culture in Indian universities.

Along with the challenges are opportunities:  Many public institutions struggle to recruit qualified language faculty, hindering the growth of foreign language education, while some languages, like Portuguese, offer job opportunities but lack awareness and enrollment. But overall, foreign language skills can help share Indian ideas with global audiences and promote cultural exchange.

Seeing potential in its future prospects, the National Education Policy (NEP) encourages multilingualism, which may lead to changes in the foreign language education landscape. With growing demand and new opportunities, foreign language learning can enhance cognitive skills, cultural empathy, and career prospects.
