Assam Government Postpones all APSC Exams After Zubeen Garg's Passing
Following the tragic death of iconic singer Zubeen Garg while swimming, the Assam government has postponed all exams scheduled for Saturday and Sunday as the state observes a period of mourning.
On Saturday, Minister Pegu confirmed the postponement of the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test (FLNAT), originally set for September 21. The exam will now be held on October 12, 2025, and around 4.7 lakh adult learners are expected to participate.Earlier, on Friday night, Pegu also announced that all half-yearly school examinations scheduled for Saturday would be deferred until after Zubeen Garg's cremation.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced the decision on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the move was made to honor the icon's legacy. The 52-year-old singer died on Friday in Singapore, where he had traveled to participate in the North East India Festival. Despite efforts by medical staff at Singapore General Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Assam has declared official state mourning from September 20 to 23 in his memory. Earlier, on Friday night, Pegu also announced that all half-yearly school examinations scheduled for Saturday would be deferred until after Zubeen's cremation.
Zubeen Garg’s musical journey spanned three decades. He was born in Tura, Meghalaya, in 1972 and raised in Jorhat, Assam, Zubeen Garg was a cultural icon whose music touched millions. Known for his versatility, he sang in more than 40 languages and left a lasting mark on Indian music with hits like Shola Shola, Ya Ali, and numerous Assamese folk songs.
He is survived by his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, his father, and younger sister. His final rites will be performed in Assam.
