Mumbai, July 25, 2025 — India continues its impressive streak on the global academic stage, securing a total of three gold and two silver medals at the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2025, held in Paris, France from July 18 to 24. The stellar performance has earned India a shared fifth place in the overall country-wise rankings, tying with Taiwan, Japan, and Russia (participating under the Olympiad flag).

The gold medalists from India are:

Kanishk Jain, Pune, Maharashtra

Snehil Jha, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh

Riddhesh Anant Bendale, Indore, Madhya Pradesh

The silver medals were awarded to:

Aagam Jignesh Shah, Surat, Gujarat

Rajit Gupta, Kota, Rajasthan

A total of 415 students from 87 countries competed in the IPhO, making it one of the largest in the Olympiad’s history. Five additional countries participated as observers. The United States topped the leaderboard with five gold medals, while South Korea, China, and Hong Kong jointly secured second place with four golds and one silver each.

The Indian delegation was led by Prof. Sitikantha Das from IIT Kharagpur and Vinayak Katdare, retired faculty from DG Ruparel College, Mumbai. They were supported by scientific observers Dr. Amruta Sadhu (St Xavier’s College, Mumbai) and Dr. Vivek Lohani (Robert Bosch GmbH, Germany).

This marks India’s 26th participation in the IPhO, with Indian students historically achieving an outstanding medal record: 42% gold, 42% silver, 11% bronze, and 5% honourable mentions. Remarkably, every Indian participant over the past decade has returned with a medal — 58% with gold and 42% with silver.

Indian Teams Excel in Mathematics and Chemistry Olympiads

In parallel achievements, India also made a strong impact at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, held in Sunshine Coast, Australia. The Indian team secured the 7th position out of 110 countries, with all six members winning medals — three gold, two silver, and one bronze. The team achieved a record-breaking national score of 193 out of 252, the highest ever for India at the IMO.

At the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Dubai from July 5 to 14, the Indian contingent won two gold and two silver medals, placing 6th among 90 participating countries.

The Indian teams across all Olympiads were trained and selected by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). HBCSE functions as the nodal body for national Olympiad programs in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Astronomy, helping identify and mentor the country’s brightest young minds.

These results underscore India’s growing excellence in science and mathematics on the global stage, reaffirming the country's commitment to nurturing young scientific talent.
