chief-minister-conrad-sangma-spends-over-650-crore-on-developing-schools

October 29, 2025, Shillong - Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the Meghalaya government has spent over ₹650 crore on developing and upgrading school infrastructure and administrative buildings across the state.

Of the total amount, ₹500 crore was allocated for the renovation and construction of school infrastructure covering lower primary, upper primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions, while ₹150 crore was used to develop administrative buildings.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed Block Integrated Development Complex at Pynursla C&RD Block in East Khasi Hills district, Sangma said the projects form part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and improve public service delivery.

The Chief Minister highlighted that improving administrative infrastructure has been a major focus since 2018. He noted that many of the state’s 46 block offices were previously functioning out of temporary or cramped facilities.

“You’ll be surprised to know that some block offices were operating from just two rooms, with four to five departments sharing the same space,” Sangma said. “So, we decided that every block must have a proper office - something that hadn’t been done for the last 30 or 40 years.”

He added that funds have now been sanctioned for all 56 block offices across Meghalaya, following a uniform design. While some offices have already been inaugurated, others are under construction or in the tendering stage. Within the next one to two years, every block is expected to have its own permanent office complex.

Sangma also referred to other major infrastructure initiatives, including the Police Infrastructure Renovation Fund, which allows district Superintendents of Police to directly undertake the repair and upgrading of police stations.

“We are ensuring that not just administrative offices but also government schools have proper facilities. Work is also underway to improve aided and SSA schools,” he said.

The Chief Minister further mentioned that substantial funds have been sanctioned for health infrastructure, including Primary Health Centres and sub-centres, and the establishment of new DC and SDO offices in underserved areas.

“If we want to deliver quality services to people at the grassroots level, we must have the right structures in place. This block complex stands as a reflection of that vision,” Sangma stated.
