The Union Budget 2025 introduced the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme, a new initiative to provide digital books in Indian languages for school and higher education students. Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, this scheme aims to make learning more accessible by offering study materials in regional languages.

Under this scheme, students across schools and universities will have access to textbooks and learning resources in digital formats. The move aligns with the government’s push to integrate technology into education while promoting linguistic diversity.

2024 PROPOSAL RELATED TO BOOKS IN INDIAN LANGUAGES

The ASMITA (Augmenting Study Materials in Indian Languages through Translation and Academic Writing) initiative, launched in July 2024 by the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC), aims to develop 22,000 books in 22 Indian languages over the next five years.

ASMITA is a joint effort between the UGC and the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, a committee under the Ministry of Education. This project focuses on both translating academic content and encouraging original writing in Indian languages, strengthening language-based education.

By expanding digital resources in multiple languages, the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme seeks to ensure that students can study in their mother tongues. This initiative is expected to benefit millions of learners and create a stronger foundation for education in regional languages.
