uk-universities-set-up-campuses-in-india-pm-modi-announces-landmark-move-during-uk-visit

In a landmark development for India–UK educational ties, six prestigious British universities are preparing to establish campuses across Indian cities — a move that not only strengthens academic collaboration but also reshapes the global higher education landscape. Leading the way is the University of Southampton, which has already inaugurated its Indian campus in Gurugram.

A Vision Turned Reality

This historic step follows sustained diplomatic and educational dialogue, culminating during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to London, where he met with key UK education leaders and reaffirmed India’s ambition to become a global education hub.

Speaking at a joint address, PM Modi declared:

“In the field of education, we are writing a new chapter together. Six universities in the UK are opening their campuses in India.”

Southampton Sets the Precedent in Gurugram

The University of Southampton, a Russell Group member and a top 100 global university, is the first foreign institution to set up an independent campus in India under the UGC's 2023 regulations. Located in Gurugram’s International Tech Park, the campus launches this August with four undergraduate BSc programmes and two MSc courses — all mirroring the curriculum of the UK campus.

Students can also opt for international exposure by spending up to a year at the UK or Malaysia campuses. In its debut intake, the university received over 800 applications and has admitted 200 students, with plans to hire over 75 faculty members.

Liverpool Eyes Bengaluru

Following Southampton, the University of Liverpool is set to open its campus in Bengaluru, having secured UGC approval. The university aims to begin enrolments from the 2026–27 academic year, becoming the second Russell Group institution to establish a physical presence in India.

More to Come: York, Aberdeen, Bristol

According to the High Commission of India and reports from Eastern Eye, letters of intent have been signed with four more UK universities — York, Aberdeen, Bristol, and Liverpool. Discussions are already underway to open campuses in Mumbai, focusing on STEM, management, and emerging interdisciplinary fields.

Fuelled by a Landmark Trade Agreement

This educational collaboration is part of a broader India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, signed on July 24, which is expected to boost bilateral trade by $34 billion annually. The agreement represents a strategic alignment not just in commerce but in knowledge exchange and transnational innovation.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and PM Modi have met at both the G20 and G7 summits, emphasizing education as a pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

NEP 2020 and UGC Reform: Unlocking Global Education

These partnerships have been made possible by progressive educational reforms under India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which — along with updated UGC guidelines — now allow top foreign universities to open fully autonomous campuses in India.

Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami praised the UK as “the first country to seize this opportunity,” noting the importance of policy synergy in making global education accessible to Indian students.

Quality Education, Local Access

The arrival of UK universities is a game-changer for students seeking international-standard education without leaving the country. These campuses promise:

  • Globally recognized degrees
  • International curriculum delivered by expert faculty
  • Affordable alternatives to overseas study
  • Industry tie-ups for internships and placements

For instance, Southampton’s partnerships with Deloitte and Investec offer robust pathways for career readiness and real-world experience.

A New Chapter in Indo-UK Relations

As India continues to rise as a global education destination, this move signals a deeper commitment to cross-border academic exchange, transnational innovation, and talent development.

With the doors now open for more international universities to follow, India is not just importing world-class education — it's redefining where and how that education is delivered.
