"The day people start celebrating a daughter's birth, I'll start charging my fee again," Dr Rakh from Pune.

A daily wage labourer admitted his wife to a hospital for delivery with deep trepidation, fearing that if he had a girl child, he might have to mortgage his home to cover the cost of a cesarean section. After the baby was born, he anxiously asked the doctor about the gender.

You have been blessed with an angel (a baby girl),” Dr Ganesh Rakh replied. When the father asked about the hospital bill, Dr Rakh told him, “When angels are born, I don’t charge any fee.” Overwhelmed with emotion, the man fell at his feet, calling him a god.

Dr Prasanth Nair shared the narrative of Dr Ganesh Rakh from Pune in a post on X, which was later reposted by industrialist Anand Mahindra, and wrote, "Dr Ganesh Rakh in Pune has been doing this for 10 years - he does not take even a single paisa if a baby girl is born. So far, he has delivered over 1,000 babies for free,” Nair said in his post, adding: “Dr Rakh’s Save the Girl Child initiative has transcended borders and inspired change globally. Stay blessed, Doctor!”

Sharing Nair’s post, Mahindra said: “As a father of two daughters, I know twice over what it’s like when an angel is born in your house. But this Doctor is also an angel. An angel of Grace and Generosity.”

Declaring Dr Ganesh Rakh as his source of Monday Motivation, Mahindra also shared a message for his fans and followers: “This post has reminded me that there is no more powerful way to start a week than by asking yourself how your goals and your work will positively impact your community.”

As Anand Mahindra’s post went viral, social media users thanked Dr Rakh for his efforts, saying: “Angels come in all forms.”
Another user added, “Respect for people like him who have kept humanity alive.”

Dr Rakh launched his hospital in Pune in 2007. While speaking about his initiative with the BBC during an interview in 2016, Dr Rakh said, "I want to change attitudes - of people, doctors. The day people start celebrating a daughter's birth, I'll start charging my fee again. Otherwise, how will I run my hospital?"

Dr. Ganesh Rakh runs a hospital in Pune, Maharashtra, with a unique mission to save as many girl children as he can. In the past decade, since he launched Mulgi Vachva Abhiyan (Marathi for "campaign to save the girl child"), Dr. Rakh and his team have delivered over 2,000 baby girls without charging any medical fee.

It all started when he was particularly disturbed when he had to tell relatives that a girl was born; the relatives’ faces would turn sullen, the mother would start crying, and sometimes they would even refuse to pay the bills. On the other hand, male baby births were greeted with joy and a big distribution of sweets! He said, "This is when I decided that I would waive the fee if a girl is born in our hospital. Like how a male birth was welcomed, we cut the cake, distribute sweets, and celebrate the birth of the girl."

Daughter aversion is an evil mindset in Indian society that needs to be uprooted. Only then will we see effective change.

He also said, "I have a young daughter, Tanisha. Every baby girl I deliver or any young girl I get to help, I view them as my own daughter. My wife, Trupti, has always supported me despite all the challenges we faced. She has stood beside me and managed the hospital superbly all these years. Without them, it would have been impossible."

Causes of the stigma are India's patriarchal society, the dowry system, and in some parts of India, girls are seen as economic liabilities, leading to a desire for male children who can support their families and also carry on the family name and business.

Changing societal attitudes and promoting a culture of equality and respect for girls is crucial.  By working together, we can create a society that values and celebrates the girl child and equips them with the opportunities and backing they deserve.
