The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially released the notification for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination (I), 2026, opening the gateway for aspirants aiming to join India’s elite defence academies. The examination offers entry into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA). The written exam is scheduled to be conducted on April 12, 2026.

Eligible candidates can now apply online through the commission’s official websites, upsc.gov.in or upsconline.nic.in, with the application window closing on December 30, 2025, at 6 pm.

Eligibility Criteria

The age and marital status requirements differ across academies:

  • IMA & INA: Unmarried male candidates born between January 2, 2003, and January 1, 2008.

  • OTA: Unmarried male candidates born between January 2, 2002, and January 1, 2008.

  • AFA: Candidates aged between 20 and 24 years as of January 1, 2027.

Educational qualifications vary depending on the academy and discipline. Aspirants must meet all academic conditions as detailed in the official notification.

Selection Process

The CDS 1, 2026 recruitment process comprises four stages:

  1. Written Examination – Objective-type papers tailored to each course

  2. SSB Interview – Evaluation of leadership qualities, aptitude, and personality

  3. Document Verification – Verification of academic and personal credentials

  4. Medical Examination – Assessment of physical and medical fitness as per defence norms

How to Apply

Applicants must register using a valid email ID and mobile number on the official portal. After generating login credentials, candidates need to complete the application form by providing personal details, educational qualifications, and course preferences. Scanned documents, including a recent passport-size photograph, must be uploaded as per the prescribed format. Payment of the application fee, wherever applicable, is to be done online.
